Mads and producer Nikolaj Arcel shot down reporter’s question about their new film, “The Promised Land”. The movie is set in 1750’s Denmark and the reporter asked them if they are worried about the lack of cast diversity. This visibly annoyed the actor, who fired back “Are you?”. Arcel then patiently and politely explained that the cast makeup reflects the historical reality of the film.
Mr. Mikkelsen opined on the idea of political correctness before, calling it an “instant death to creativity” [source].
The reporter’s question highlighted the bigger problem though: the obsession of the entertainment industry with DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion). As he pointed out, Oscars now have rules for films that can even be considered for the award. One of them is featuring a lead or significant supporting character from an “underrepresented racial or ethnic group”. Meaning that films like “The Godfather” or “Schindler’s List” would have no chance of winning it, if they were released today – too many white people [source].
It is really refreshing to see a celebrity calling out the absurd and hateful diversity cult. Artists like Mads need to be supported before they are cancelled.
